Real and Personal Property (In-Kind)
You can contribute real property—such as a home, land, or other real estate—as an outright in-kind gift. The value of your donation is based on a professional appraisal of its fair market value at the time the ownership is transferred.
In some cases, you may choose to donate property while retaining a partial interest. For example, donating a remainder interest in a personal residence or farm allows you to claim an immediate income tax deduction based on the present value of the remainder interest, and it can also help you avoid capital gains taxes on any appreciation.
Personal property—such as equipment, artwork, books, or jewelry—can also be donated, subject to specific IRS guidelines.
